iOS 8 Release Makes Apple Home Automation Possible

Sep 17, 2014

Today is the day. The day that loyal Apple consumers with an affinity for smart home technology have been waiting for since the most integral features of Apple iOS 8 were unveiled in June. Within the next few hours, iPhone users should be notified that a software update is available to them. If you are not notified automatically, you can check for the update by navigating the following touchscreen route: Settings --> General --> Software Update. After downloading iOS 8, being hailed by Apple as "the biggest iOS release ever," you should have that control over smart home technology in your home that has eluded iPhone and iPad users for so long.

Apple HomeKit Programming Protocol

Apple HomeKit is the name of the platform through which Apple smart home control will be so much easier. According to a statement on Apple's website, "HomeKit connects your home devices safely and seamlessly so you can better manage accessories like lights, thermostats, door locks, and garage doors." With iOS 8, your iPhone or iPad can serve as a remote control for your home's integrated device no matter where in the world you may be. A host of third-party systems and devices not previously compatible with iPhones or iPads can now be configured to work with your Apple smart home control product.

Control4 Compatibility

One of the most exciting aspects of HomeKit is that it will make your iPhones and iPads compatible with Control4 products. As the leading provider of home automation controlllers, Control4 already has a presence in many smart homes across the country. The Apple Control4 MyHome app should work better on iPhones and iPads than it ever has before.

Siri Integration

If you have grown fond of obtaining Siri's help throughout the day and live in some sort of smart home, your appreciation for Siri should grow with your iOS 8 download. Controlling your smart home no longer will require the push of a button. If you choose, you can open your garage door, turn off lights, and adjust the temperature in your home simply by issuing commands to Siri.

Other Exciting iOS 8 Features

While home automation compatibility is undoubtedly one of the most exciting characteristics of iOS 8, there are several features of the software to look forward to. Others include a new Health app, a QuickType keyboard that should revolutionize texting and crafting e-mails on your phone, and iCloud Drive.
